Cavapoo vs Bernedoodle: Which Is Right?

If you're researching like crazy and trying to decide between a Cavapoo vs Bernedoodle, I love that. It usually means a family is drawn to both sides of my program and isn't sure where to start.

Honestly, both my Cuddle Cavapoos and my King Bernedoodles are wonderful choices for the right family. Neither one is a consolation prize. The better fit really comes down to the size you want, the personality you're dreaming of, your activity level, and your grooming commitment. Here's how a King Bernedoodle vs Cavapoo from my program stack up.

Cavapoo vs Bernedoodle at a Glance

Cuddle Cavapoo Snapshot

  • Parents: a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dad and a small Moyen Poodle mom (F1), or a Cavapoo crossed with a Cavapoo (multigenerational)

  • Adult size: typically 17–35 lbs depending on the parents, with most landing around 20–30 lbs

  • Lifespan: generally 12–15 years

  • Coat: soft, fluffy, and "non" to almost non-shedding

  • Personality: incredibly playful, crazy social, and eager to please

I always say they are the Goldilocks of dogs. Not too big. Not too small. Just right.

King Bernedoodle Snapshot

  • Parents: a Cavapoo (or a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) crossed with a Mini Bernedoodle

  • Breeds in the mix: Cavalier, Bernese Mountain Dog, and Poodle

  • Adult size: typically 25–35 lbs

  • Lifespan: 12–15 years, and the smaller ones even up to 18

  • Coat: wavy or straight, with none to very little shedding (more on that below)

  • Look: that classic Bernedoodle look families fall in love with, including tricolor coats

  • Personality: loving, highly social, friendly, and in general a more chill breed

Despite the name, my King Bernedoodle is the smaller dog. A Standard Bernedoodle is usually around 60–90 pounds, and a purebred Bernese Mountain Dog can be 60–110. My King gives you the Bernese influence and the Bernedoodle look in a family-sized 25–35-pound package. You can see exactly how they grow on my King Bernedoodle size page.

Size and Everyday Family Life

The size ranges overlap, with King Bernedoodles sitting toward the upper end. Both fit comfortably in most homes, but there is a real difference in feel between a 22-pound dog and a 32-pound dog when it comes to couch cuddles with kids.

When a Cuddle Cavapoo May Fit Best

If the 20–30-pound range feels like your sweet spot, a Cuddle Cavapoo might be exactly what you're picturing. They're a dense, lap-size dog, and their weight is just the right comforting pressure in your lap. That's a big part of why they make such great comfort and emotional support dogs. They're also big enough to go on runs and hikes with their family, with sturdier bones and muscles from the Cavalier side so they can hang with kids and other dogs. Here's more on Cavapoo size.

When a King Bernedoodle May Fit Best

If you want something a little more substantial, a dog your kids can really lean into on the couch, but you don't want a large-breed dog, the 25–35-pound King Bernedoodle hits that mark beautifully. You get the Bernedoodle look without the size of a Standard, and you get Cavalier sweetness layered in. Fair warning: they're gorgeous, and people will stop you on your walks to ask about your irresistible dog.

Temperament: Playful Social Butterfly or Chill Family Companion?

This is where the two feel the most distinct to me. I'm describing what I see in my own dogs, not guaranteeing every individual puppy.

Cuddle Cavapoo Temperament

My Cuddle Cavapoos are incredibly playful, so gentle with young kids, and so eager to please that they're easily taught tricks and boundaries. They are extremely intuitive and loving, and they are crazy social.

One honest caveat I always share: they need lots of affection and attention, and they do not like to be left alone too long. It is vital to crate train them at a very young age so they learn to self-soothe and don't develop separation anxiety. This isn't a flaw. It's just part of who they are, and this is truly the breed that will steal your heart and soul!

King Bernedoodle Temperament

My King Bernedoodles are fabulous, loving family pets and great with children, thanks to genes from the loving and very affectionate Cavalier, Bernese Mountain Dog, and Poodle. They love other dogs and all people, and they are highly social and friendly. Because they are intelligent and very social, it's important to start training and socializing early, and that's exactly what I focus on in their first eight weeks with me. You can read more about King Bernedoodle temperament on its own page.

Energy and Exercise Needs

Both breeds need daily time with their people, play, and mental stimulation, but their energy styles differ.

The Playful Cuddle Cavapoo Style

Cuddle Cavapoos are enthusiastic participants in family life. Runs, hikes, yard play, training sessions: they are in, as long as they're with their people.

The More Chill King Bernedoodle Style

King Bernedoodles love to be active, but in general they are a more chill breed that just loves to be with their family. If you are a family that loves hiking, camping, and being active, but you also like lazy days at home with moderate walks, this is your dream dog!

Coats, Shedding, and Grooming

Are Cavapoos and King Bernedoodles hypoallergenic? No, but yes. Let me explain.

Do Cavapoos and King Bernedoodles Shed?

Both are considered hypoallergenic, and both can be very low shedding. But all dogs shed at least as much as a human, even Poodles. The real question is how much, and the answer has very little to do with how curly the coat is.

Furnishings decide shedding, not curl. Furnishings are the gene-driven eyebrows, beard, and longer face hair you see on doodles. A dog with two furnishings will shed less than a dog with one, and a dog with no furnishings has fur and will shed noticeably. The low-shed gene mostly affects how soft the coat is. That's why my honest advice to any family is to ask the breeder how many furnishings a puppy has, not just whether it looks fluffy.

For the Cavapoo side, I break it all down in do Cavapoos shed. For the King Bernedoodle side, see are King Bernedoodles hypoallergenic?

Grooming Needs for Both Breeds

Here's where the two are the same: daily brushing and grooming every 2–4 months. One small edge for the King Bernedoodle: its wavy or straight coat is easier to maintain than a curly coat.

Health Testing and Lifespan

Cuddle Cavapoos and King Bernedoodles both generally live 12–15 years, and smaller doodles can live even longer. I won't promise an outcome for any individual dog, but here's what I do to give every puppy the best start.

What I Screen For in My Program

I am OBSESSED with canine genetics, and I teach genetics classes to other breeders. My parent dogs are DNA tested through Embark for 175+ diseases, with Animal Genetics when deeper testing is needed, and OFA tested by a certified vet. Every puppy has a vet exam at 6–8 weeks and goes home with a 2-year health guarantee (details are in my Purchase Agreement) plus 30 days of free Trupanion pet insurance with no waiting period.

Testing doesn't eliminate all health risk. Nothing does. But the Cavalier, the Bernese Mountain Dog, and the Poodle each have health considerations worth screening for, which is why DNA and OFA testing matter so much to me. Your vet is the best person to guide your puppy's care as they grow.

I'm always happy to share parent health results privately by text or email. I don't post them publicly because scammers steal real breeders' photos.

Raised the Same Way, Wherever You Live

Whichever breed you choose, your puppy is raised in my home with my young kids, or in a guardian home under my instruction, with daily 10-step handling from week 3 and socialization to at least 10 new people. Every puppy goes home with a blanket with mom's scent, a Puppy Go Home Packet, and a lifetime of support from me.

I'm in South Jordan, Utah, but puppies go home all across the United States. You can use an in-cabin flight nanny to your local airport, fly in and meet me at the Salt Lake City airport, or pick up in South Jordan. Here's how getting your puppy home works. Pricing changes from litter to litter, so see my price page for current details.

Cavapoo or Bernedoodle: Which Is Right for Your Family?

Think honestly about your time at home, grooming commitment, activity level, and the size that feels right.

A King Bernedoodle May Be Your Best Fit If You Want…

  • A 25–35-pound family cuddle buddy with a more substantial feel

  • The Bernedoodle look, including tricolor coats, without the size of a Standard Bernedoodle

  • Cavalier, Bernese Mountain Dog, and Poodle all in one dog

  • A loving, social companion who's up for hikes and camping but in general a more chill breed at home

  • A wavy or straight coat that's easier to maintain than a curly one

A Cuddle Cavapoo May Be Your Best Fit If You Want…

  • A 17–35-pound companion, most often around 20–30 pounds

  • A dense lap-size dog with that comforting cuddle weight

  • A playful, crazy social, eager-to-please dog who's ready for runs, hikes, and training

  • A dog for a family that's home a lot, since Cavapoos don't like being left alone too long

If you want my honest take: if the Bernedoodle look and a slightly bigger, more laid-back dog are calling to you, start with my King Bernedoodles. If the Goldilocks lap dog sounds like your family, meet my Cuddle Cavapoos. And if you're still torn, fill out a puppy application and ask me about the parents behind an upcoming litter. I love helping families figure this out.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main difference between a Cavapoo and a King Bernedoodle?

The main difference is the breed makeup. My Cuddle Cavapoos are a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel crossed with a small Moyen Poodle (F1), or Cavapoo to Cavapoo (multigenerational). My King Bernedoodles are a Cavapoo or Cavalier crossed with a Mini Bernedoodle, so they bring together the Cavalier, the Bernese Mountain Dog, and the Poodle. King Bernedoodles have the Bernedoodle look and are, in general, a more chill breed.

Are King Bernedoodles bigger than Cuddle Cavapoos?

Generally a little, though the ranges overlap. My Cuddle Cavapoos are typically 17–35 pounds, with most around 20–30. King Bernedoodles are typically 25–35 pounds, so they tend to sit at the upper end of that window. Both are much smaller than a Standard Bernedoodle.

Do Cavapoos or King Bernedoodles shed more?

Shedding comes down to furnishing genes, not the breed label and not coat curl. A dog with two furnishings will shed less than a dog with one, and a dog with none sheds noticeably. Both of my breeds can be very low shedding, but all dogs shed at least as much as a human, so always ask the breeder how many furnishings a puppy has.

Which is calmer: a Cavapoo or a King Bernedoodle?

In general, King Bernedoodles are the more chill breed: they love to be active but just love to be with their family. Cuddle Cavapoos are incredibly playful and crazy social. Both are loving family dogs, and every puppy is an individual.

Is a King Bernedoodle a Cavapoo Bernedoodle mix?

Yes. A King Bernedoodle comes from pairing a Cavapoo, or sometimes a Cavalier, with a Mini Bernedoodle. That brings together the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, the Bernese Mountain Dog, and the Poodle in a 25–35-pound family dog.
